Unmarkdown

Markdown deserves better.

Unmarkdown is a markdown publishing platform built for people who are tired of watching their perfectly formatted text disintegrate the moment it touches Google Docs.

The problem nobody talks about

Every day, millions of people copy something from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, paste it into Google Docs, and watch in quiet horror as their perfectly structured text transforms into a wall of hashtags, asterisks, and broken tables.

Headers become ###. Bold text shows up as naked **asterisks**. That beautiful table the AI made? It is now a crime scene of pipes and dashes that you get to explain to your manager.

This happens because AI tools write in markdown, a format that every developer tool understands and every office application pretends does not exist. Your email client sees a > and does not think "blockquote." It thinks "greater than sign, probably."

Someone had to fix this. It was deeply boring work involving parsing edge cases and arguing with rehype plugins at 2am. But here we are.

What we built

Unmarkdown takes markdown and turns it into clean, formatted content that actually works where you need it: Google Docs, Word, Slack, OneNote, Email, or a beautiful published page with its own URL.

We also added 62 templates (because plain text deserves options), 12 AI editing actions (because first drafts are first drafts), a REST API with 13 endpoints (because developers have needs too), and an MCP server (because AI assistants should be able to publish things without human supervision, and that is either exciting or terrifying depending on your perspective).

The whole thing runs in the browser. Your content stays yours. We do not train on it, sell it, or read it unless you publish it to the world yourself.

How we think about this

Markdown is the best writing format that nobody wanted to deal with the hard parts of. The writing is easy. The "making it look right in the 14 different apps your team uses" part is the problem nobody solved, because it is deeply tedious work that involves learning how Google Docs interprets inline styles versus how Outlook renders table borders versus how Slack handles nested lists (spoiler: not well).

We find it oddly satisfying. There is something deeply rewarding about taking a wall of raw markdown and watching it render into a properly formatted Google Doc with working headings, styled tables, and code blocks that actually look like code blocks. Every edge case we fix is one less person staring at naked asterisks in a board presentation.

Unmarkdown is independent, self-funded, and built by a small team with very strong opinions about whitespace. We are not backed by venture capital, we are not trying to become a platform for everything, and we are not going to pivot to enterprise collaboration software. We make markdown work where it currently does not. That is the job.
